What is Surrogacy?

Surrogacy is like a team effort to help people have babies when they can’t do it on their own. It involves a legal agreement where hopeful parents work with a fertility clinic, a surrogacy agency, a woman who carries the baby (the surrogate), and sometimes an egg donor. The clinic creates embryos and puts them into the surrogate’s uterus. The surrogate then carries the baby until it’s born. Once born, the baby legally belongs to the intended parents who wanted the baby all along. There are two kinds of surrogacy; Traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy.

Traditional Surrogacy

Traditional surrogacy involves a woman (the surrogate) becoming pregnant using her own egg, which is fertilized either through artificial insemination with the intended father’s sperm or through IVF with donor sperm. In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate is genetically related to the child she carries. This method is less common now due to legal and emotional complexities, as well as advances in reproductive technology favoring gestational surrogacy, where the surrogate has no genetic connection to the child.

Due to advancements in technology, this form of surrogacy is less common nowadays.

Gestational Surrogacy

In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate carries a baby conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF), where the egg and sperm are either from the intended parents or donors. This means the surrogate has no genetic connection to the child she carries. The embryo is created in a lab and then transferred to the surrogate’s uterus, where she carries the pregnancy to term. This method allows individuals or couples who are unable to conceive or carry a pregnancy to have a biological child with the help of a surrogate.

What is An IVF?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a method of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). It is a medical procedure used to help individuals or couples conceive a child when natural conception is difficult or impossible.

The process involves fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body, typically in a laboratory setting.
